2017 Statistical Bulletin of China’s Tourism

The domestic tourism market saw a rapid growth in 2017, with the stable development of inbound and outbound markets, and remarkable achievements in structural reform of supply-side. The number of domestic tourists reached 5.01 billion and the revenue reached RMB 4.57 trillion, respectively rising by 12.8% and 15.9% year-on-year. The number of inbound tourists was 139 million, bringing an international tourism revenue of USD 123.4 billion, respectively increasing by 0.8% and 2.9% as against the prior year. The number of outbound Chinese tourists stood at 131 million, with the consumption of USD 115.29 billion, an increase of 7.0% and 5.0% respectively over 2016. The total revenue of the tourism industry was RMB 5.40 trillion, up 15.1% year-on-year. Tourism contributed RMB 9.13 trillion to China's GDP, accounting for 11.04% of the total. 28.25 million people were directly employed in tourism industry, and 79.9 million people were directly and indirectly employed, accounting for 10.28% of the total employment.

I. Domestic tourism

- The number of domestic tourists reached 5.01 billion, up 12.8% over the prior year, including 3.677 billion urban residents and 1.324 billion rural residents.

- China's domestic tourism revenue stayed at RMB 4.57 trillion, up 15.9% as against the prior year, including RMB 3.77 trillion from urban residents and RMB 0.80 trillion from rural residents.

- The per capita consumption of domestic tourists was RMB 913.03, wherein that from urban residents was RMB 1,024.56, and that from rural residents was RMB 603.30.

- During the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday, China received 1.049 billion domestic tourists, with the tourism revenue of RMB 1006.9 billion.

II. Inbound tourism

- The number of inbound tourists reached 139 million, rising by 0.8% year-on-year, including 29.17 million foreigners, up 3.6%; 79.8 million Hong Kong tourists, down 1.6%; 24.65 million Macao tourists, up 4.9%; 5.87 million Taiwan tourists, up 2.5%.

- The number of inbound overnight tourists reached 60.74 million, up 2.5% year-on-year, including 22.48 million foreigners, up 3.8%; 27.75 million Hong Kong tourists, up 0.1%, 5.22 million Macao tourists, up 8.6%; 5.29 million Taiwan tourists, up 4.0%.

- International tourism revenue reached USD 123.4 billion, up 2.9% year-on-year.

III. Outbound tourism

- The number of Chinese outbound tourists reached 131 million, an increase of 7.0% over the prior year.

- New destinations for Chinese tourists include the Republic of Sudan, Uruguay, SAO Tome and Principe and New Caledonia.

- Consumption of outbound tourism reached USD 115.29 billion, an increase of 5.0% over the prior year.

IV. Star hotel scale and operation

By the end of the year, a total of 10,645 star hotels had been included in the statistical management system, wherein 9,566 hotels had completed the financial statement for 2017 and passed the examination of provincial tourism administrative departments. The financial data of 9,566 star hotels shows:

- There are 1,476,600 guest rooms and 2,505,500 beds; the original value of fixed assets was RMB 516.11 billion; total operating revenue reached RMB 208.393 billion; taxes paid was RMB 9.688 billion; the annual average room occupancy rate was 54.80%.

- Among the 9,566 star hotels, there were 816 five-star hotels, 2412 four-star hotels, 4,614 three-star hotels, 1,660 two-star hotels and 64 one-star hotels.

- There were 2,237 state-owned star hotels in China, with a total operating revenue of RMB 53,946 million and tax paid of RMB 1.325 billion in 2017.

- There were 375 star hotels invested by foreign investors, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, with a total annual revenue of RMB 28.193 billion and taxes paid of RMB 744 million.

V. Tourism education and training

- By the end of the year, there were 1,694 higher tourism institutions and ordinary institutions with tourism department (major), 4 more than the number at the end of the prior year, with 172,400 students enrolled. There were 947 secondary vocational schools, 23 more than the number at the end of last year, with 101,500 students enrolled. In total, there were 2,641 tourism colleges and universities with 273,900 students.

- The total number of people participating in education and training in the tourism industry reached 5.865 million last year, up by 1.12 million and 23.6% over the prior year.
